Within each of the rug categories, there are many
different styles. The following is a summary of just some
of the most popular styles amongst the over 300 different
variations; ranging from intricate Isfahan to the very
popular geometric designs of the Gabbeh.
Isfahan
Isfahans are renowned world over for their luxurious beauty
and elegance. Isfahans use different combinations of wool,
cotton, and silk for their designs, with each intricate pattern
being planned by a master weaver before the rug begins the
weaving process. The trademark of Isfahan design is the sinuous
curvilinear pattern.
Tabriz
Tabriz
rugs are made in and around the city of Tabriz and
are famous for their dense floral motifs and exceptional
quality. Tabriz rugs can incorporate many colors including
burgundies, reds, variations of creams, and rich greens.
Intricate vases, exotic foliage, flowers, and gardens
are just some of the elements depicted in a Tabriz rug.
Kashan
These remarkable rugs are unique and legendary in their appeal.
The Kashan's distinctive patterns are dense in design, usually
with a single medallion in the center surrounded by extensive
floral motifs including rosettes, blossoms and leaves. The
Kashan was frequently found hanging on ancient palace walls,
and to this day, is commonly known as the Palace Carpet due
to its perfectly proportioned details.
Nain
The luxurious Nain
rug is generally found to have a certain curvature
in its pattern with the typical design being a single
medallion on a blue background. Excellent grades of wool
and silk are used exclusively on a foundation of fine
cotton. Nain weavers can take several years just to create
one rug. To a Persian, the word 'Nain' is a synonym for
fine. The colors are almost exclusively beige and blue,
with reds, greens, and yellows extremely rare.
Kashmar
The durable and unique Kashmar rug from the
province of Khorassan is a rare find in today's marketplace.
Almost all Kashmar
rugs have a pile of wool and a foundation of cotton,
on which an intricate historic pattern (usually a pictorial)
is woven.
Qum
Perhaps amongst the finest of Persian and
Oriental
rugs, the Qum is usually made of 100% silk with very
high knot counts. The Qum contains minute details and
is often created by a master weaver towards the end of
his life. The Qum often depicts hunting scenes, all on
the finest of silks.
Gabbeh
The popular Gabbeh
rug is well known for its incredible variety of colorful
designs and simple geometric patterns. Gabbeh designs
are extremely simple and uncluttered with large fields,
bold stripes and geometric human or animal shapes as common
graphic elements.
